Rock and Roll 2

4 min read
I've been thinking about my list of R&R great and music changing songs.  There is a LOT of great music out there in all the forms but I wanted to stick to rock and I wanted to have criteria, reasons for a song being on the list.

There may be  groups that I don't really like but I've seen what the songs have influenced other songs and set benchmarks for other writers.

Love Me Do (The Beatles)

Their first hit and the turning point for pop music.  Other people were there first but this song hit the right note at the right time.

Layla (Derek and the Dominos)

I've heard that Clapton once said that this was his best song ever...that was a while ago and he may have changed his mind but...It is an amazing song that I hear something different every time I listen to it..it is like the ocean with waves and currents and undertows.

Clapton wrote it because he was in love with George Harrison's wife.  They later married and it was their son who later fell out of a window to his death.

The drummer (I've forgotten his name) wrote the piano part not long after the album was released, he bludgeoned his mother to death and then did the same to the bass player.  Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident.  (If you are ever in Macon, GA, go by his grave and leave a bottle of wine)

Round About (Yes)

Their first hit where they elevated the Moog synthesizer to its height as an effect and a rock instrument.  Their lyrics are incomprehensible but the images are amazing

"In around the lake, mountains come out of the sky, they stand there...24 before my love and I'll be there"

Stairway to Heaven (Led Zepplin)

You cannot have a list like this without this song.  I think it is illegal not to include it.  The grand crescendo of pop music and the advent of metal music.

The Weight (The Band)

The Band is considered by musicians (and me too) as the archetypal band, a band's band, Clapton once said that his only disappointment as a musician was that he wasn't in The Band. They are a fusion of the best what individuals can bring to a group project.

The version of "The Weight" on The Last Waltz with The Staple Singers takes that song and gospel music to a new level.

Tangled Up In Blue (Bob "by God" Dylan)

"And she opened up
A book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the 15th century

And everyone of them words rang true
And glowed like burning coals
Pouring off of every page
Like it was written in my soul
From me to you....

Tangled up in blue"

The reason why I write...the standard to which I aspire...simple elegant and to the heart.  My god, what a writer.

S&M (Metallica)

Yeah, this is a double album and the rest on this list are songs but this CD has to be taken as one piece.  I am NOT a metal or Metallica fan, nor do I intend to be, but they way the band was mad a part of the orchestra is sheer genius.  Usually, when a band redoes a song with an orchestra it is simply them playing with strings behind them...an effect that can be done with a synthesizer.  But, here, M becomes a part of the orchestra and the orchestra becomes a part of the band.  Amazing musicianship.

Rocky Mountain Way (Joe Walsh)

Walsh has always been an innovative guitar guy.  Most of his hits have involved a new way of doing something and in this song he introduced the voice box.  Peter Frampton owes a lot to him.

Angel From Montgomery (Bonnie Raitt)

I was gently reminded (see comments below) that I needed to list some women.  I stand corrected, I have been in love with Bonnie Raitt for a long time, if we were trapped in a snow bound cabin, I'd make her play till her fingers bled.  An amazing musician.

Although "Angel From Montgomery" was written by John Prine, it has become her signature song about the sadness of women trapped in a marriage back when divorce was not an option.  The song, the words, her performance are perfect.

That's all for now...

Rock and Roll

1 min read
I've journalized and written about sex so now it is time for rock and roll.  I'll be leaving drugs alone, completely.

I was listening to "Layla" by Derek and the Dominos...the old version...and I decided that I want the piano section of that song played at my funeral (waaaaay in the future).  To me, that song is pivitol in the journey rock music has taken in my few years around.

So here's a list of great and changing rock songs, no particular order, but I do have reasons and criteria beyond "hey, I like it...":
Layla (Derek and the Dominos)
Round About (Yes)
Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeplin)
The Weight (The Band)
Tangled Up In Blue (Bob "by God" Dylan)

There will be more as I think of them or as my friends suggest them.  Just never "Free Bird"...

I'm curious about something.

What is the average time lapse between posting an artistic nude to the first invitation to e-sex?

One friend says from 2 to 5 minutes...

I posted an artistic nude of myself a year or so ago but no one offered to sex me, sigh, one guy did comment to tell me that it wasn't artistic and asked me to take it down.  I did take it down but not because of any comments but because in 2 days I had over 2oo page views and that seemed a little creepy to me...

Anyway, how do you handle the invitations?
